About the LM 1st year Summary exam
Write a 300/350 word summary of a text from a newspaper (length: approx. 2000 words)
o Your summary should not exceed the word limit but should cover all of the most important points of the article.
Your summary should be clearly structured
o Introduction and conclusion
o division into clear paragraphs
o appropriate use of logical connectors
Your summary should be written in a formal, academic style
o Journalistic prose does not share all the characteristics of formal academic prose and often contains informal elements.
Your summary should not plagiarise the source text and should clearly reference the author.
o Never copy from the source text, except for very brief, clearly marked quotations (use quotation marks)
o Never let your readers forget that they are reading a summary, not an argumentative essay. Include one reporting structure (“As the author notes” / “The journalist goes on to argue that …” / “In ---‘s opinion ...” / “ --- further states that …”
Your mark out of 30 will be calculated based on the following criteria:
o Range and accuracy of language (/10)
o Structure and Coherence (/10)
o Style and register (/10)
