About the LM 1st year Summary exam

o   Your summary should not exceed the word limit but should cover all of the most important points of the article.

o   Introduction and conclusion

o   division into clear paragraphs

o   appropriate use of logical connectors

o   Journalistic prose does not share all the characteristics of formal academic prose and often contains informal elements.

o   Never copy from the source text, except for very brief, clearly marked quotations (use quotation marks)

o   Never let your readers forget that they are reading a summary, not an argumentative essay.  Include one reporting structure (“As the author notes” / “The journalist goes on to argue that …” / “In ---‘s opinion ...” / “ --- further states that …”

o   Range and accuracy of language (/10)

o   Structure and Coherence (/10)

o   Style and register (/10)
