3rd Year Triennale: General Information

All students will do ONE 2-hour Translation class and ONE 2-hour Listening and Summary Writing class per week. For times, see timetable.

TRANSLATION and ADVANCED GRAMMAR

The objective of the course is to introduce students to practical approaches to translation from Italian into English.

In general terms, the types of texts used will include subject areas such as tourism, business, advertising, journalism, publishing and education and so relate to the three L11, L12 and L15 degree courses. Translation practice will focus on the kind of skills needed to translate effectively from Italian into English, skills that students may be called upon to use in a future work context.

In addition, the course will deal systematically with those areas of English grammar which cause the most problems for Italian learners and in particular when translating between Italian and English.

Exercises from My Grammar Lab - Advanced, C1/C2, With key - (M. Foley & D. Hall, Pearson, 2012

ISBN: 9781408299111) will be explained and done in class and assigned for homework.

LISTENING COMPREHENSION and SUMMARY WRITING

The aim of this part of the course is to improve listening skills in order to enable students to understand spoken English in a variety of situations, to increase knowledge of lexis in all fields related to current affairs and to improve writing skills to enable students to write a well-organised 250-word summary in a semi-formal academic style.

Students will listen to and discuss a variety of TV and radio news-type broadcasts, featuring a number of different speakers, both native and non-native.
